Has America Lost Its Moral Direction?

By Bob - Posted on 14 April 2008

Have we allowed the immoral minority to take over our great country? We seem to have thrown out our core values and beliefs for fear of being called a bigot, racist, homophobic, liberal, conservative, or any other name used to describe someone who does not agree with the current trend.

Everyday we are hearing someone say their civil rights are being violated and they deserve the right to do whatever they please. The sad part is Americans are buying into this insanity. Our “Politically Correct” response to all of this is slowly destroying our country. Americans have taken the position of, “as long as it doesn't affect me, go for it.” In reality, this gradual chipping away of our core values has started us on a downward slide into total chaos that will affect all of us on a much larger scale.  Let me know what you think.

I'm not from America, but had America some moral direction? Americans, from the time I remember, were killing each other, killing other people, cheating, making money by using other people, not protecting the nature,...
And moral is a word which is very subjective to me. Everybody can mean by it something else...

Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment.

Yes, America has done all of those things at one time or another. However, I suggest you pull your head out of your ASS and look at what your country has done throughout its history. There is not one country in the world that has not commented the same acts, so you can spare me your arrogant comments.

You appear to be like many foreigners who want to jump on the “Bash America” bandwagon, but have absolutely no clue about all the good America has accomplished.

So what country are you from? Your name links to a UK site, but I don't think your from the UK.

Ok I agree with the idea that for example, drug companies needing to write a constitution on the back of their drugs is sort of silly. They're doing this of course to prevent someone from suing them.

I also think that being politically correct is sort of an oxymoron, because the "polis" and the "polit", the citizen and the state are not always correct. So I guess I agree that trying to be politically correct is causing lots of people to bite their tongues and still get mis-paraphrased.

But because the public is so varied, I don't think you can talk about CORE VALUES any more. Or at least, could you tell me what you mean by those?

Also I really don't know what any of what you pointed out has to do with MORALITY. Maybe you mean Logic or Judgment at least?

I’ll answer your two questions first and then move on to what I meant in my comments.

Core values are a set of deeply held beliefs that influence the way people and groups behave. Core values usually guides a person throughout their life. Our military live by a set core values that help guide them though extremely hard times. To say we are so varied you don’t think we can talk about core values anymore sort of proves my point.

I needed something short to explain the morality part you mentioned, so I’m using this from the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy; “A code of conduct that, given specified conditions, would be put forward by all rational persons. Accepting a normative definition of morality commits a person to regarding some behavior as immoral, perhaps even behavior that he is tempted to perform.”

So your reference to judgment or logic sort of follows. Any rational person would be expected to behave in the same way in any given situation. So I guess it would be logical to think the average American would help his or her fellow American in a situation judged threatening. You know, pull a guy up off the subway tracks just before a train speeds past. That would be the moral thing to do, but would all Americans do that? How many would laugh at the man’s misfortune if no one saved him?

So now, you should understand what I mean about core values. With that in mind, I have to ask, how does a society function without some sort of common beliefs or core values? The answer is, it doesn’t. A society survives by focusing on the greater good of the whole group and working together towards common goals. These common goals are what allow people to feel connected to each other. Without them, people will feel alienated and conflict is sure to rise.

Not long ago, America was that kind of place. Americans believed in honesty, ethical behavior, hard work, family values and doing what was right to get ahead in life. Today, we see individualism dominating the masses and it has come down to its all about “ME” and to hell with anyone else.

Your example about the drug companies is an excellent point. Do you really think awarding someone hundreds of millions of dollars in a law suite does that person or anyone any good (ok, maybe the lawyers)? The drug companies have insurance, the lawyers get their big cut, the person who won the money is now rich (albeit maybe still injured or without their love one) and the rest of us are left paying the tab (I’ll leave tort reform for another discussion). My point is that instead of digging into what went wrong and trying to fix the problem, they go straight for the money that will make “ME” feel better.

Just look at what we’re seeing in the news today. Not a day goes by we don’t hear about one of our political leaders lying or involved in some sort scandal. Our children have lost their senses and are modeling the destructive behavior of gang bangers, bimbos like Britney Spears and overpaid spoiled brat athletes. Reality TV has gotten so bad, that some of the highest rated shows are ones that show people’s lives destroyed all for our entertainment (ever see the Moment of Truth?).

There was a time in America where we would stand up and say enough is enough. However, to question the actions of some people today draws fire from groups like the ACLU. Why do we allow the ACLU to protect groups that advocate how to molest a child over the internet?

Where are the common values guiding America today? Do they reflect the values that guide your behavior? They sure as hell don’t reflect mine.
