Stelter: Did the Media 'Underappreciate the Strength of the Blue Wave in the House?'

12 hours 54 min ago
Sunday on CNN’s “Reliable Sources,” host Brian Stelter questioned if the news media underappreciated the “strength of the blue wave” at the midterm election. “Did the news media underappreciate the strength of the blue wave in the House on Tuesday night? Five days later, it sure looks that way,” Stelter opened the segment. “Back on Tuesday, wave spotters said the midterms were not delivering the huge repudiation of President Trump that the Democrats wanted to deliver.” Stelter noted how CNN’s Van Jones called the results of Tuesday’s election “heartbreaking,” but then said a “blue wave” is “becoming more true every day” since votes are still being counted. “Votes are still being counted in Arizona, and California, and other states and recounts are taking place. So it now appears the Democrats will pick up at least 35 seats in the House. I mean, here’s the map already. They’re already far ahead of the 23 they needed in the House,” he stated. 13 hours 42 min ago
During a Sunday interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) weighed in on acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker’s appointment to replace Jeff Sessions. Margaret Brennan asked Graham, “[A]re you going to ask [Whitaker] to recuse himself and is Matthew Whitaker’s appointment constitutional?” “I think he was appropriately appointed legally,” Graham responded. “I don’t think he has to recuse himself. I am confident the Mueller investigation will be allowed to come to a good, solid conclusion, that there’ll be no political influence put on [FBI special counsel Robert Mueller] by Mr. Whitaker to do anything other than Mr. Mueller’s job.” Brennan noted Whitaker’s previous criticisms of Mueller and his investigation and asked Graham what suggests Whitaker can remain “impartial.” “Well, you don’t recuse somebody because they have opinions different than the people they’re overseeing. … The bottom line here is that Mr. Mueller will be allowed to do his job without political interference by Mr. Whitaker.” Follow Trent Baker on Twitter @MagnifiTrent
